Director John van Doorn was elected to Director in 2018. He considers it an honor to have been elected and entrusted by the people of north San Diego County and looks forward to overseeing the continued standard of excellence provided to this community by the men and women of the North County Fire Prevention District.
He has been a resident of San Diego County for over 25 years and has made his home in Fallbrook with wife Joanne since 2012. He is a father to eight children and stepchildren, and is twice a grandfather.
Education & Employment
Director van Doorn earned his Bachelors degree in electrical engineering from UC Irvine and presently holds the position of Senior Electronics Engineer at Singular Genomics, Inc, in La Jolla, California. His area of expertise is in analog and digital circuit design, optical design, and intellectual property.
He has previously served as a contributor to a number of successful startup companies in this community, most notably, ThermoScan, Cymer Laser, and Gen-Probe. He has also served as a member of the Advisory Council of the Bourns College of Engineering at Cal Baptist University and as a technical mentor to students enrolled in the Zahn Innovation Center of San Diego State University.
Director van Doorn is a member of the Board of Directors for the local chapter of NCFM. As part of that activism, he has been an tenacious proponent for reform with the county’s Department of Health and Human Services, as well as an advocate for judicial reform in our state courts. He has testified on numerous occasions before the County Board of Supervisors, as well as at the State Capitol and at Judicial Council proceedings held regionally and at the Supreme Court in San Francisco.
Professionally, he is a member of the local chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Optical Society of Southern California.
The Board's Biggest Challenge
Guiding the department to make the best investments/decisions in advances afforded by new fire-fighting technology and information systems, while continuing to maintain the excellent level of service currently provided by NCFPD.
